Well that got my heart going . . . I just updated the back-end database of our website to SQL v5.0 from 4.0 to see if I can get the photo gallery running.

Of course I lost the entire website for about 5 minutes.

Maybe I should do these things after getting home around 3am from the brewery?

Awesome party last night, It was nice to be able to talk to so many people and listen to superb local artists jamming for the extended Devil’s Canyon family. We are looking forward to the next Bluegrass night in December.

OK, lets see if I can get a photo gallery working.

The Belmont Community Players Present:

“The Fortune Hunter’s Daughter”
Or
“His Little Jewel”

(A Melodrama in roughly three or so acts spiced with saucy song and dance numbers!)

If it’s autumn, it’s Melodrama season in Belmont! The Belmont Community Players are excited to announce their 20th Anniversary Edition of “Melodrama at the Barrett Community Center”, 1835 Belburn Avenue, Belmont 94002.  This year we present renowned local “thespians” performing the classic melodrama, “The Fortune Hunters Daughter” (or, “My Little Jewel”), directed by the inimitable duo of Robin Fife (drama) and Judy Rechsteiner (singin’ and dancin’).  The entire production is laced from beginning to end with the orchestral interpretations of Musical Director Alan Mueller (on the honky-tonk piano!).

Filled with handsome heroes, virtuous damsels in distress, and dastardly villains — and interrupted occasionally by terpsichorean delights performed by fetchingly costumed lovelies and debonair gents — “The Fortune Hunter’s Daughter” is a spectacle you won’t want to miss!  This is family entertainment at its very best (although you may want to cover the little one’s eyes when the “Diamond Lil’s” swing onto the cabaret floor to anoint tempting male pates with embarrassing, lipstick flavored souvenirs  of the evening’s divertissement.

So put on your biggest grins, leave your inner Scrooge at home (no “bah, humbugs” allowed) and trundle down to Barrett starting the evening of Oct 17th.  Other evening performances are on Oct 18, 25 and Nov 1, 7 and 8.  All evening curtains rise at 8:00 PM.  There are two matinees:  the Oct 26 Luncheon Show (lunch at 12:00 noon, curtain at 1:00PM) and Nov 2 at 1:00PM.  All of the dates are in the Brewery Calendar.

Be sure to bring your best “boos” for the villain, “cheers” for the hero and be ready to “swoon” for the heroine.  Everyone contributes to the fun at a melodrama!

Seating is Cabaret style tables of six or ten so be sure to bring your friends.  Wine, local beer from Devil’s Canyon Brewery, soft drinks and water will be available, served by perky barmaids; and the more or less bottomless buckets of nibbles are “FREE”!

Tickets at: (650) 599-2720 or via e-mail at boxoffice@belmontcommunityplayers.org . General admission:  $15.00, ($20.00 for the Luncheon Matinee) and a special price of $12.00 ($17.00) each for groups of ten or more.  Horseless carriage parking is FREE!

For more info, visit their web site.

Beer Yeast Separates The Ales From The Lagers

Here is a fun National Public Radio Podcast we ran across:

Different types of beers — ales, stouts, etc — are distinguished primarily by their yeast, but now these groupings might get even more complicated. Scientists have examined the genetic sequences of 17 unique lager yeast strains from breweries in Europe and North America, tracing variations in their genetic code back through time.

Guest:

Gavin Sherlock, assistant professor of genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine
